Mr Smo – Artist Statement

I don’t think in images I’m aiming for.

I think in the circumstances that might bring them out.

I’m not sure I’m not a machine –

because I’m drawn to images created by devices that see in place of humans.

But I’m also interested in the human – although that, in turn, isn’t visible.

Ideally, I would find leaks from another reality.

That’s what my medium is – different, grey, rejected.

I work in layers.

Each one holds traces of decisions, rejected paths, optional variants and errors.

All become part of the whole.

A cycle is a form of focus for me,

and I call my objects internal boards –

because they reveal diagrams of things that escape full reading.

The more I try to understand them, the more they pull me in.

It’s better not to think too much.
